2024 EMI Best Paper Awards just released!

Emerging Microbes & Infections (EMI) just announced the winners of its 2024 Best Paper Awards based on the novelty, scientific significance, and potential impact to the clinical practice and global health in the field of emerging infectious diseases.

First Place Award

Title: Climate change, its impact on emerging infectious diseases and new technologies to combat the challenge

Authors: Hongyan Liao, Christopher J. Lyon, Binwu Ying & Tony Hu

EMI comments: This is the most read EMI paper in 2024, and it describes the important roles of climate change to the emerging infectious diseases and new technology tools that can be used to fight this trend.

Second Place Award

Title: ESKAPE in China: epidemiology and characteristics of antibiotic resistance

Authors: Qixia Luo, Ping Lu, Yunbo Chen, Ping Shen, Beiwen Zheng, Jinru Ji, Chaoqun Ying, Zhiying Liu & Yonghong Xiao

EMI comments: The current epidemiology and characteristics of ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp.) and relevant mechanisms of resistance to recently introduced antibiotics were reported.

Third Place Award – A

Title: Effective and targeted latency reversal in CD4+ T cells from individuals on long term combined antiretroviral therapy initiated during chronic HIV-1 infection

Authors: Minh Ha Ngo, Joshua Pankrac, Ryan C. Y. Ho, Emmanuel Ndashimye, Rahul Pawa, Renata Ceccacci, Tsigereda Biru, Abayomi S. Olabode, Katja Klein, Yue Li, Colin Kovacs, Robert Assad, Jeffrey M. Jacobson, David H. Canaday, Stephen Tomusange, Samiri Jamiru, Aggrey Anok, Taddeo Kityamuweesi, Paul Buule, Ronald M. Galiwango, Steven J. Reynolds, Thomas C. Quinn, Andrew D. Redd, Jessica L. Prodger, Jamie F. S. Mann & Eric J. Arts

EMI comments: The authors assessed HIV-1 latency reversal using a multivalent HIV-1-derived virus-like particle (HLP) to treat samples from 32 people living with HIV-1 (PLWH) in Uganda, US and Canada who initiated combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) during chronic infection.

Third Place Award – B

Title: Unveiling the pathogenic mechanisms of Clostridium perfringens toxins and virulence factors

Authors:Anny Camargo, Juan David Ramírez, Raymond Kiu, Lindsay J. Hall & Marina Muñoz

EMI comments: The authors aim to clarify the current state of knowledge on the structural features and mechanisms of action of the major toxins and virulence factors of C. perfringens and discuss the impact of genetic diversity of toxin types in tropism for several hosts.
